Seasonal Clothes Swapping

As we prepare to say an official good-bye to summer, it becomes clear that colder weather and the need for warmer clothes is right around the corner. For most families with young kids, that means the task of swapping out clothes for the appropriate season is at hand.

This is one task that can definitely be very time consuming, especially if you have more than one child. Here are a few tips to help make the process a little easier.
Piles of clothes

Swap Clothes For One Child At A Time

If you have two or more children, the easiest option is to just work on the clothes for one child at a time. That way, you’ll keep yourself from getting overwhelmed with an overabundance of clothes. If you have the time, you might even want to dedicate one day to each child.

Be Honest With Yourself

As you sort through clothes, especially if you have hand-me-downs, be honest with yourself. Does your child really need 10 pairs of jeans? Will your child actually wear that velour jumpsuit that her cousin wore 10 years ago? Will that jacket that just barely fit at the end of last winter really still fit a month from now?

Take stock of what you have on hand and feel free to swap those clothes your child has outgrown, donate the older outfits, relegate things to the dress up box and even throw away the old, stained, holey clothes. This will make your life much easier in the long run. It will also make it much easier for you child to pick out clothes to wear and to keep their closet and drawers clean.

List The Haves, Needs and Wants

As you sort through the clothes, keep a running tally on what you have. This is a quick way to keep an eye on items that you might have too many of. It will also show you where the needs are. Then, you can easily compile a list to fill in the blanks on your “have” list with all of the additional needed articles of clothing. Add any additional wants you or your child may have and then start shopping.

Of course our first recommendation is to take a look at the OutGrowingIn website. There is a great feature where you can search boxes of clothes up for swap based on sex, size and/or season. With a premium membership, you’ll be able to receive emails when boxes matching your pre-specified qualifications (including brand names) are listed for swapping. You can also list your own boxes of clothes that you will not be needing for the upcoming season to gain additional swaps.

After you’ve gotten what you can there, watch for sales at your favorite stores for the other items. Target the needs first and fill in with the wants as your able. Before you know it, your little ones will be all set for the cold weather!

Making Life Easier Mondays

Over on the OutGrowingIn website, there’s a great spot called the Idea Swap where everyone can go to swap their parenting ideas. It’s filled with all kinds of wisdom and tips!

Each Monday, we’ll highlight 4 or 5 tips from the Idea Swap boards. You can then share your own tips here, or hop over there and join the conversations!

On Baby’s Sleep Routine…

Our routine is bath, bottle, book, then bed. It helps to wind him down and he’s calm by the time we finish the book. Lay your baby down when he’s still awake (but sleepy) and he will do better with teaching himself how to fall asleep.

On Bee Sting Relief…

It is now time for the bees to be out and about as the children play… The best solution I have found for bee stings: Honey & baking soda… mix 1/2 and 1/2 to a paste… put it on bee stings and watch the pain, swelling, and itching go down. Good luck!

On Quick Cleaning Tips…

…Some of my favorite quick cleaning tips: 1. Every time you take a shower use the adjustable head to rinse the entire shower out completely before getting out, this will eliminate build-up 2. Before putting a face cloth or hand towel in the hamper, wet it and wipe down the sink and top of toilet 3. When you wash the dog and the bathroom floor is soaked, instead of just rubbing up the wet part of the bathroom floor, keep going…make use of that spilled water and do a quick wipe on the whole floor!

On Saving Money…

If there is a brand you use a lot, go to their website and join their email list! That way if there is a special promotion or money saving coupons, you will be notified!

What tips do you have to share with us this week?

School Time Clothing Rules – Part 2

Last week we talked about a simple clothing rule to make life a little easier during the school year – seperating clothes into occasion-specific piles and storing together. That tip will definitely help to alleviate any clothing-related headaches!

So what other area can we focus on that will be both a sanity saver and a time saver? How about shoes? Nothing can put a family behind schedule faster than a few misplaced shoes!

Here’s a great tip -

Get A Shoe Basket from The Happy Housewife:

We have a basket by the front door for shoes. We don’t wear shoes in our house so when the kids come in they put their shoes in the basket, when we leave they get the shoes out of the basket. I am amazed at how this simple idea has saved us so much time getting out the door.

Some other ideas include:

  • Limit the number of shoes each family member has.
  • Store different shoes in different locations, ie. daily shoes go by the door and all other shoes stay in a closet.
  • Give each child their own cubby to store their shoes in.
  • Use over the door shoe organizers or other specially designed shoe holder.
  • Have all family members take off and put on their shoes in the same exact spot each day.
What works for you when it comes to avoiding lost shoes (and sanity!) with your kids?
